  • Confidentiality is one of the most important aspects of mental health counseling. For therapy to be successful, a trusting relationship needs to be built. Oftentimes, information that is disclosed in therapy is the first and only place a person has shared sensitive subject matter and it is important to know this information will not be shared elsewhere. Exceptions to confidentiality include: 1) Suspected past or present abuse or neglect of a child or elderly person that is disclosed by a client. 2) If the therapist has reason to believe a client may harm themselves or others, appropriate action needs to be taken to protect any or all parties involved. If a client would like information disclosed to another party this can be discussed with the therapist and a Release of Information form can be signed to allow for certain information to be shared.

  • Sessions typically last 50 – 55 minutes. Therapy sessions are often scheduled weekly or every other week. Therapy can either be short-term or long-term and this will depend on a person’s needs and the issues that are presented.
